I have no idea how many times I have been walking, cycling and driving at Rue Blaes in Brussels without seeing the shop. Rue Blaes is one of the antic-shop streets leading to the famous flea marked “Jeu de Balle“. One Saturday I passed one of the many antic-shop on my bike and had to stop. Outside was parked an old Volvo Amazon. That’s not so unusal, it was a Swedish flag hanging next to the shops entrance that made me stop.
I went in and asked for the owner, Christian Wahren, who showed up to be Swedish, so we spoke a kind of Nordic language with each other ( mix of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish). He told me that he have been doing business in Brussels for the last ten years selling antics and that he also have had success selling old Volvo cars.
I returned the day after with my camera and took some pictures. The story was then published in the weekend edition of the Swedish financial newspaper Dagens Industri. I got a small space with picture on the front page and inside the paper. It is a good feature for a paper like this, it is about a Swedish person doing business abroad, being successful and different. Furthermore the shop can pride itself of having the former Prime Minister for Belgium Guy Verhofstadt as a regular client.
