We photographers always look for a different way to make pictures when covering events with heads of states. Sometimes we are lucky, but more often than not, we get more or less the same situation as the others, because there is no other possibilities to make it different. What can make a picture stand out from the the others is what kind of lens we have used or when we capture the picture.
When we manage to get something different is it not always for sure these “unique” photos will be published, but at least we tried to do it different.

The picture on the right, showing Jan Peter Balkenende, Nicolas Sarkozy, Jose Luis Rodrigues Zapatero, Georgios Papandreou and Angela Merkel arriving in the meeting room for their first meeting session at the EU-Summit, is for sure not anything special, when it comes to be exclusive or different. I was standing shoulder to shoulder with photographers from the other international agencies.
Earlier that day I was more lucky. The first assignment I did was as a official photographer for the Government of Luxembourg covering a bilateral meeting in connection with The European People’s Party (EPP) Summit. While waiting, the German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel left earlier and I got my first different picture of her going down the stairs with her aides.

The next, I can claim nearly to have for myself, was from after the family photo at the EU-summit later the same day. I got a nice close up of Angela Merkel, speaking seriously with the Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.

But these two pictures above of Angela Merkel is only good for later use in a feature or background article, so I will have to wait for them to be published one day, who knows?
