Mandø reportage from the archives

This photo I found today searching for old documents in some old moving boxes.

It originates from the small Danish island Mandø in the end of 1989 while I still studied to become a photojournalist. Together with a journalist, I was assigned by Politiken, one of the big newspapers in Denmark, to do a reportage from daily life at this little wadden sea island off the southwest coast of Jutland in the Wadden Sea. It is a farmers couple I surprised outside their little farm. I asked if I could photograph them, and without a word they posed for me holding each others hands. I got happy when I found this picture. It shows two persons that have been through a few things in life and still love each other and has pride.

It also brought good memories back from a great job during one weekend outside the tourist season. Again, here in the middle of a big city, being reminded that I my self is an islander and therefore had a great time doing this reportage, because we somehow spoke the same “language” or at least understood each other.

I do not remember if this picture was used in the Sunday feature, but it certainly was one of my favorite photos from that reportage. I would like to see the other pictures I took from that trip, but for that I will have to travel to Copenhagen where the negative are in the archives of the agency Polfoto, so it will have to wait.
